Interviewing the winners of the Virtual Fashion Design Contest! [VRoid STYLE Special Issue]
Thank you for always using VRoid.
VRoid Style, your favorite web magazine about VRoid fashion, is back with a special issue entirely dedicated to VRoid’s Virtual Fashion Design Contest!
The first-ever virtual fashion design contest on VRoid took place from December 27th, 2021(Mon) to January 31st, 2022 (Mon). In this contest, participants could use VRoid Studio’s models A, B, and C as fashion models, and make them wear their original designs. The number of entries was one for the record books: over 1000!
We interviewed the five winners of the Gold Medal Award, Excellence Award, VRoid Award, and Illustrious Award and asked them about what drives them in their work, their tips and tricks, what tools they use, and more! Take a look behind the scenes of the winning works and into the mind of the creators. Let what you find inspire you for your own creations!

■ A comment about your entry:
My entry was posted as a series of three different works, each of which I designed mixing street style, classic fashion, runway fashion, and punk, to create a completely new style. The color palette is monotone, with strong, eye-catching red accents.
■ A word about the virtual model you used:
I chose Model C because I wanted to portray a “main character.” I wanted to bring out his villain-like charm, and to do so I changed his overall aura by retouching his body shape, makeup, costumes, and hair color while keeping his facial features as they are.
I had a lot of fun using Model C, he looks great as the bad guy.
■ Tips and tricks behind your work and how you come up with a concept:
I am always trying to create androgynous designs.
First, I decide on a few keywords that will be at the base of the concept (in this case, fallen, villain, monotone, blood, etc.), come up with a rough silhouette and color scheme, set the parameters in VRoid Studio, and then start drawing.
■ Tools and software you use with VRoid Studio:
After working on the basic design in VRoid Studio, I use CLIP STUDIO PAINT to add material textures and text. I also use the same software to add color variations and make adjustments.
■ Final message and future plans:
I really wanted to create an award-winning work, so I put a lot of effort into my entry, although I wasn’t sure if people would like Model C as a villain. I never thought I’d actually win the Gold Medal Award, and I’m both surprised and elated. In the future, I’d like to keep tearing down walls with designs packed with the things I love.

■ A comment about your entry:
I paid special attention to the ribbon and the silver accessories around her neck, and on the sleeves. I had quite the hard time drawing a kind of fur that made them look fluffy.
■ A word about the virtual model you used:
I chose Model B because I thought she’d look great in a tiger stripe outfit. She’s very cute, and I had a lot of fun with my entry.
■ Tips and tricks behind your work and how you come up with a concept:
I have tried to draw the most prominent parts as neatly as possible.
■ Tools and software you use with VRoid Studio:
I use CLIP STUDIO PAINT to draw almost everything, and PureRef to view my materials.
■ Final message and future plans:
I'm happy I won! Thank you very much.

Model A -Flower Cage-
Creator: るおー*るおみ( ・ω^ )
■ A comment about your entry:
I incorporated elements from the character's original costume design and designed the garment to retain its original charm while incorporating my own aesthetic. My favorite elements are the hook-shaped metal fitting on the belt and the back of the lace collar in the shape of feathers.
I focused on giving meaning to every single detail instead of on the glamor of the outfit in itself.
■ A word about the virtual model you used:
I chose Model A because she’s the one I could most easily incorporate into my own style and aesthetic. And because I love her delicate lines and fragile aura.
I designed the outfit to match the character from the planning stage, but since her hairstyle, body type, etc. were a bit different from those of my OCs, I made some adjustments along the way. I think the final outcome suits her well!
■ Tips and tricks behind your work and how you come up with a concept:
I reference a large number of pictures and materials, as well as create my designs in a way that balances my interests and the character's personality, colors, aesthetics, and elements.
Also, I’m aware of the limitations set by VRoid when it comes to the structure of the clothes, but I know a layering function has recently been added in the official version, which makes clothes look more three-dimensional when created with multiple layers, instead of just operating on the surface like in the skirt I designed.
■ Tools and software you use with VRoid Studio:
I use CLIP STUDIO PAINT to create the textures.
■ Final message and future plans:
Thank you so much for letting me win a VRoid Award! I was quite proud of my work so I’m happy I won. Here on out, I’ll keep expressing myself through the creation of 3D models in VRoid Studio. Once again, thank you very much, and long life to VRoid!

■ A comment about your entry:
I took advantage of Model B’s devilish cuteness to create a stylish and lively look for her. The parts where I put the most effort are her outfit’s accents: the metal hearts and the ribbons.
■ A word about the virtual model you used:
When she was first released, I thought she was so cute! This was a good opportunity to come up with a nice costume, so I picked her.
■ Tips and tricks behind your work and how you come up with a concept:
VRoid lets you adjust the parameters rather freely, so I created this outfit to make it look as good as possible on models of any body type.
■ Tools and software you use with VRoid Studio:
SAI, Procreate.
■ Final message and future plans:
Thank you so much for picking my work!

■ A comment about your entry:
I created this outfit with a focus on the three-dimensionality of the overlapping fabrics and the overall silhouette. I think I did a good job balancing the shape of the sleeves, the ruffles on the collar, the volume of the skirt, and the number of ruffles throughout the outfit.
■ A word about the virtual model you used:
I chose Model A because she looks great in autumn colors, and I thought she would definitely pull off the burgundy outfit. I think I was able to create a solid look, while the frills and gold decorations give her outfit an extra touch of glamor.
■ Tips and tricks behind your work and how you come up with a concept:
I create the textures by rotating them 360 degrees in VRoid and checking them in their entirety. I have to make sure that the wrinkles, seams, etc. look good from all angles, not just from one direction.
■ Tools and software you use with VRoid Studio:
I use SAI2 for the textures and only make some adjustments in VRoid.
■ Final message and future plans:
I am very surprised and happy to receive the Illustrious Award, as I did not expect it at all! Thank you very much! I’ll keep working on creating various types of clothing with VRoid.
